Vamos a crecer.....what it is.

This radio broadcast will reach every Puerto Rican and every citizen in the island of Puerto Rico. This radio broadcast acknowledges that mental health problems are the most grave problem we face. It manifestations include every aspect of living in this island and is evidenced in the daily news on TV, newspapers and radio news. Also particular non-scientific styles of broadcasting negatively increase the level of anxiety and adds another stressor to radio listeners. We want to contribute to changing that style.

With over 30 years of experience in Psychiatry, over three years of experience hosting radio programs Dr. Galarza is well trained to apply these acquired skills to the task of orienting the public on general mental health issues, specific mental illness and the most modern management and treatment of these conditions.

Radio Isla 1320 AM is the most heard radio station with island-wide coverage and a very high ranking by Arbitron. It is the most heard radio station in the metropolitan area during the day and the most heard radio station in the afternoon in Puerto Rico.

This is not a talk show for entertainment but a scientific endeavor and interview with scientists, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental and other health institution directors, insurance and managed mental health care organizations.

Our first program, scheduled for Sunday October 15, 2006, will include a discussion of environmental issues, contaminants in the air and soil, and how contamination may lead to medical conditions and mental health diseases. A well known professor in environmental chemistry in the University of Puerto Rico will discuss this topic. Contaminant-associated telarche and its complications associated to cancer, family distress and depression will be part of the topic on Sunday. We have entitled the weekly Sunday radio broadcast VAMOS A CRECER because of its goal to provide the most scientific and positive outlook on everyday news and longstanding problems that affect mental health.

In future programs we will cover specific mental disorders like bipolar and unipolar illness, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, alcoholism, effect of untreated mental illness on other family members, and mixed medical and psychiatric conditions and their pharmacological and psychosocial management. A specific scheduled will be provided but every Sunday broadcast will address the mental health repercussions of recent events in Puerto Rico.
